Twilight the Comedy....er, At Least on My Row, Anyway

Remember how excited I was for Twilight to become an historic movie event?

Well I was informed by some friends that its presence was gracing the dollar theater {and by dollar I mean $1.75, because that's how much our dollar theater charges these days}. So the 4 of us packed up and headed out for a night on the town.

As predicted it was deliciously terrible.

Entertaining it was, but for all the wrong reasons. It's been a long time since I've laughed so hard watching a movie. Thank you, Twilight. I think it was worth the $1.75, but I wouldn't have paid a penny more that's for sure.

Of three things I am absolutely certain: a terrible script combined with horrible acting makes for a very poor movie, even worse cinematography and make-up will make you tear up, combine all of them and you have the makings for a movie that will surely bring tears to your eyes - even if it's because you are laughing so hard you think you might pee your pants.

Wall-E

Let me begin by telling a story:

Shelley took her newly adopted daughters (from Ghana) to see Wall-E a while ago. A whole new experience for them - they had no concept of a movie theater. About half way through the movie, the younger (?) one turned to Shelley and said "ok. Let's go home now."

Shelley tried to explain to her daughter, "no. We stay and watch the whole thing because we paid for it." Her daughter just couldn't comprehend it. I thought this was really funny when Shelley told me about it. I thought, "one more thing to adjust to, I guess." You know, a culture shock sort of thing.

And then I saw Wall-E. About half way through the movie I thought, "ok. let's go home now." Yeah. It was so boring!

Besides that, it was WAY too preachy for me. Don't get me wrong, I love doomsday Vonnegut stories just as much as the next guy (maybe even more), but seriously, I just can't take it when the only dialogue in the entire movie is 'oh, poor earth, you just need someone to take care of you and by golly, we are finally going to step up to the plate and do it because earth is so great and Wal-Mart is of the devil'. Side note, I have to agree with them there, Wal-Mart is of the devil. I hate that place.

Maybe some people need to be beat over the head with a giant, feature-film, didactic hammer, but I prefer a little subtlety.

So why didn't I just walk-out? Well, that would be wasteful.

Mom and Dad and the Crystal Skull

My mom and dad have been in town this week - Saying goodbye to family before they head to the islands. We haven't seen much of them, though.

Robert and I went to see Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull or whatever it's called with mom and dad, Jill and Hibbs, and Rod and Cathy last night. It was *alright*. You have to love Indy, really, but I had a hard time with the whole alien thing. Aliens who have been dead since the 15th century, coming to life in order to grant your greatest desire (which, in true Indy fashion, if it's selfish will kill you), and then resurrect their ancient space ship and shoot off into space - - correction - - "the space between space" was just a little over the top.

Oh well. Robert and I talked about it a bit, and I think I'm coming to grips with it - A LITTLE. We compared it to the other Indy flicks: an ancient society who believes in the mystical power of their god. In all the others, the mystical power turned out to be true, so I guess it's keeping with the faith, so to speak.

I also took issue with the whole reunite-with-the-old-flame-and-oh-by-the-way-he's-your-son bit. sigh. There were some funny bits, though, and it was basically entertaining.

Adding it to the Indy collection is up for debate. You almost HAVE to so you have the entire collection, but then it becomes like Rocky, and you realize you could really do without 1 or 2 of those....
